Maclear’s story subtly nudges readers toward care of the environment. A flock of bird-watchers visit a remote and icy island but it is beset by an advancing fog that no one seems to notice. One yellow bird is watching the watchers and giving them witty titles — Red-hooded Bespectacled Female (Juvenile), for example. Pak’s expressive watercolors capture both the isolation of the island and the characters who inhabit or visit there in this engaging tale.
