Joan Procter had a remarkable life as a woman scientist who became curator of reptiles and habitat designer at the London Zoo in 1923. Valdez includes details of Procter’s childhood (and her pet lizard) and ends with the tea parties at the zoo she gave for visiting children where reptiles were guests of honor! Sala’s illustrations bring her life—and beloved reptiles—into colorful focus.
