John Rocco
The Blizzard of 1978 is the real-life basis for this story from Rocco's childhood in Rhode Island. A few flakes seen from his classroom window become over fifteen feet when his town is blanketed and then shut down by the snow. He becomes the helper with his tennis racket "snowshoes" while the snowplows make their slow way to town at last. Rocco's text captures the sense of adventure even a crisis can bring with the gathering white in his rich illustrations enhancing the effect.
